Feng Shui Sounds: The Most Relaxing Song in the World

headphonesI often write and talk about the role of the five senses in Feng Shui. A home or apartment should smell pleasing, offer a sense of serenity in the space, and also have pleasing sounds as you enter to truly welcome visitors.

Five-tubed wind chimes with deep, clear, resonant tones can be extremely pleasing to the ear. You might also consider programming your iPod to play some of the most relaxing songs ever when you enter your home. What are some of the most relaxing songs?

British researchers, commissioned by bubble bath and shower gel company Radox Spa, pinpointed 10 of the “most relaxing songs ever,” based on the cadence, gaps between the notes (harmonic intervals), and the tones.

The researchers named “Weightless” by Marconi Union, as the “most relaxing song ever.” Even the name seems to lift all your worries away. Researchers say the lack of a repeating melody helps your brain to switch off, “because you are no longer trying to predict what is coming next.” The random chimes, researchers say, invoke a sense of relaxation, and the low whooshing sounds and hums are like Buddhist chants, designed to put you in a trance-like state.

The song has a steady beat of 60 beats per minute, which is an ideal heart rate for meditation. As you listen, your heart rate gradually adjusts to match that beat, a process called entrainment.

It takes about five minutes for this process to occur, and the song is eight minutes long, offering an additional three minutes of bliss with your heart in sync with the rhythm of the song. (This could also be why faster songs with high tones are good for exercise, as they help increase your heart rate for a good work out, and inspire you to move faster.)

Here are the other top picks for “most relaxing song, which all fell behind Weightless in the study. (Only Weightless bears the disclaimer that you shouldn't listen while driving!)

1. Marconi Union - Weightless
2. Airstream - Electra
3. DJ Shah - Mellomaniac (Chill Out Mix)
4. Enya - Watermark
5. Coldplay - Strawberry Swing
6. Barcelona - Please Don't Go
7. All Saints - Pure Shores
8. Adele - Someone Like You
9. Mozart - Canzonetta Sull'aria
10. Cafe Del Mar - We Can Fly
