Do's and Don'ts of Being Happier

do more of what makes you happy resized 600If you're reading this blog, I'm going to take the guess that you're looking for tips because there's some part of your life (or maybe many parts!) that you're not happy with. Here are some “do's and don'ts” to be happier, right now.

DO:

Surround yourself with mementos of the past. - Whether it's photos on your walls or souvenirs, carefully selected items that remind you of happy times will give you a boost whenever you look at them.

Talk about happy times in the past. - If you really want to bond with someone, bring up some of your happiest memories involving them. You'll grow closer and you'll both feel great. Double-win!

Get enough B vitamins and whole grains. - The B vitamins found in leafy greens and dairy products are automatic mood-boosters. Around 2 PM, our serotonin levels -- feel-good hormones -- begin to drop, eating something rich in B6 and B12 can help. Complex carbohydrates like those found in whole grains help fill us up until dinner time. (Because it's hard to be happy when you're hungry.)

DON'T:

Dwell on bad times. - Analyzing situations to see where you went wrong has been shown to be ineffective at solving problems. Instead, the brain gets caught in an endless loop of negativity and we feel helpless, rather than empowered. Accept the past as the past, and move on. You'll do better in the future.

Work (or play) until your body is virtually crying out for food. - Ever get so involved in something that you don't realize until hours later that you've forgotten to eat? This can lead to irritability.

Be stingy -- with your time, love or money. - Worrying that we don't have enough (time or money) makes us hang on to it even tighter, but this is a “lack mentality” that will prevent you from attracting abundance. The same goes for love. Perhaps we feel others aren't showing us love, so we hold back, too. With all three of these important parts of life, the more we give away, the more we attract. Want to start right now? Follow these 5 easy ways to share the wealth.

Dear Ken you are exactly rite about what you said. When I look at things from the past, like photos or little things I have collected from every member of the family I'm happy. Then I will run up on something that reminds me of a bad time, then I'm down again. I just wish there was an easier way to get through this. I have many of these ups and down times in my life. Thanks for bringing me these tips, I need all of them I can get.
