Feng Shui Colors For A Bedroom

Each week, I have numerous conversations with single men/ women and married couples on what the best color is to paint their bedroom. Of course each person or couple has their own unique style and many times I will tailor my suggestions based on the specific person, couple or space.

In general, pink is considered to be one of the best colors for the bedroom because it is the color associated with relationships. Pink is also thought of as an auspicious color combining the fire/ passion of red and the metal element of white. Pink represents love and pure feelings of joy, happiness, and romance.

Light blues and light greens are positive colors for a bedroom as well as small accent colors of red. Green represents tranquility, hope and freshness as seen in spring growth or that of a new plant or leaf.

If an individual is seeking to get married, then they may want to consider painting the bedroom pink or peach.

The color peach aligns with "Peach Blossom Luck," which represents attraction and love. A person that is single with peach blossom luck will be outgoing, social, make new friends and have numerous admirers. However, once married, consider painting the bedroom a different color as it can lead to adultery.

I typically don't recommend chocolate brown in the bedroom as it can give a heavy feeling. Some believe that it can be used to create a stable, established impression, I equate it to autumn, when leaves turn brown and fall to the ground.

Many Chinese stay away from having white blankets on their beds because it is similar to the shroud that covers the dead and fear sleep will seem like death. Although, plain white sheets or white sheets with flowers or colorful designs are fine. The use of pink or red sheets and blankets are used by those seeking to get married or by newlyweds to ensure wedding bliss.

When thinking about the bedroom, one of the most important principles is determining the placement of the bed in the command position, a power position that provides a view of the door, prevents surprise, and gives control of an environment.

You can incorporate peach into the bedroom any way you see fit. It can be on all 4 walls, or could be on certain walls. Each person and space are different. Some people incorporate peach into the color scheme and not with paint.

This picture took my attention.
We painted our bedroom pink last year. Our blanket has red and green leaves on it. We actually got married few months later we changed the decoration, and we love our bedroom! Our bed position and decoration is very similar with this picture, the only difference is that we have two picture frames on the top of the bed instead of one. Is that bad?

I am a single mom of two young girls. My bedroom is all white with white closet doors and white wood trim all around. I prefer green as opposed to peach but am wondering if the intensity of the color or tone makes a difference. Is a rich, dark peach preferably to a light peach color (if one is interested in getting married or finding a lifelong partner)? Is a light olive or moss green a good color? And, what about the ceiling color and wood trim? Can those remain white or is adding color to those preferable, too. Thank you!

Kris, A light color green is soothing and favorable color for the bedroom. I personally prefer lighter colors instead of darker colors regardless if it is peach, green, etc. The ceiling color and trim is fine to leave white.

Franklin, Yes, it is ok to put a painting in your master bedroom. Just make sure it is not of a single man or woman. Should be of a couple or scenery or art is fine. Just make sure that it relaxes and inspires you and not depresses you with the colors or reminds you or difficult times.

Hi Ken,
I'm single. I have implemented various feng shui elements in my bedroom, but wanted to check regarding my painting. I have a large painting of a sleeping buddha's face which is gold/bronze in color and although it's of a single image, it is extremely peaceful and gives me a sense of calm and not loneliness when I look at it. Is it ok to keep it?

Hi. I have been married for almost 10 years. My husband and I both have issues with sleep and fatigue,which interfer with our intimacy.

our bedroom is a med blue color. it is mellow but very cool...almost actic in feel. I thought it would be calming.

lately I have been thinking about changing the colour of the room to a kind of flesh tone. not peach...but a nice warm neutral. I think the colour will be calming as well as better for romance than the very cool colour we have now.

What are your thoughts about this?

Sandra, Some colors can actually deplete a person's energy. I would try the color change and it may be enough to invigorate new energy into the relationship.

Love this article! I just became single and am looking to bring greater love into my life. I bought a silver comforter with light pink sheets...however, the silver actually looks more lavender. That's not a color you mention in this article, and I want to make sure I haven't just added a color that will hurt the love energy in my bedroom. I also have two throw pillows with pink included in them.

Christina, I would consider a light green for your bedroom. For your daughter, I would consider light rose color but maybe not all the walls and for your son a light blue and white theme.

Tania, It is not ideal to have electronics, tv, etc. in the bed. Keep in mind that the bedroom is for two things and they both start with the letter "S"

I am married and currently my bedroom is painted a light pale pink. I am also a new mom and needless to say have many sleepless nights while I'm a full-time working Mom.

I feel that changing the paint color will bring better energy and happiness in my marriage - which is very strained.

Lilly, first off, congratulations on your new arrival. This is a very exciting time. Enjoy it! Above, I suggested colors for the bedroom. I usually suggest colors for each person but for you I think you have your heart set on a specific color and instead of me sharing it with you, I want you to tap into your intuition and be strong enough to share it and paint it. To improve your relationship, think about sharing love not only with your new arrival but with your significant other. And make sure you have time for yourself as this can be the most important love of all.

Hi I am a singleparent/mother, and I my bedroom is in the North section of apartment. My bedroom takes up NW N and NE of apartment. My bed head touches north wall. I just bought a canvas painting with left half as abstract art and the right half as front half face of sleeping buddha for my bedroom. However someone told me it is bad luck to put a painting of buddha in the room. Please let me know if its okay to put up the painting.

Sometimes art is just art. You have to decide what it means to you and symbolizes. However, I would not personally have a buddha with half a face in my bedroom. When dealing with individuals, you want to see their full face and for bedroom art or pictures, best to have pairs of people represented. Here you have a half a person.

Chevonne, Keep in mind that when speaking of cardinal direction of North, etc., that you are referring to a different school of Feng Shui that I do not practice. I practice the BTB method where we view a space by how the chi enters a home or room. The bedroom is a yin feature, water is a yang feature so I don't recommend running water in the bedroom. Also, the noise of the water can disturb your sleep. I recommend light, soothing colors. I'm not sure how deep and dark the olive green is. I always compare green for the bedroom as a color of a new leaf.

I need some help with my room. I have a very bad set up with a west facing room. My door is on the East wall towards the South side of the bedroom and my window on the West wall towards the South. The entire North wall of my room is a closet. There is nowhere to put my bed that is not in the draught between the door and window. I need a good color scheme. We just had our house painted about two months back. Prior to painting, I was doing extremely well as a translator. The master bedroom is where I work from. Ever since we got it painted in light and dark (indigo) blue color, my work seems to have been affected negatively (less work), and I find that I am not able to concentrate well and am getting distracted by different things. Have we chosen the wrong colors for our room?

Honey, What was the color of the master bedroom before you painted it? Dark colors including dark blue can lower a person's energy. I recommend colors on the lighter side as listed in the above article.

Hi Ken,

Me and my husband(married for 17 yrs)wanted to paint the master bedroom located in the northeast part of the house. Wanted to have the north wall painted/ or wallpaper in a pinkish purlish colour with the rest of the walls white.

But the colour of the north is black and blue. hence the concern.

Hi Ken, great article! I'm single,not really dating seriously yet wanting to be married in the future, and I'm very new to feng shui.

I just had my bedroom repainted 3 months ago. Three walls are a pale sage green and my accent wall is the dreaded chocolate brown.

I've decided to repaint my bedroom pink, however I do love the idea of an accent wall.

Which color should I use as an accent wall, that won't clash with pink? I was thinking red, but that visual isn't quite clicking for me. Or should I not consider an accent wall at all? Thanks!

Mary, You may want to consider your accent wall to be pink and the rest of the walls white or ivory. A red wall is a little to energizing for the bedroom.

Bi-B, Pink is good color for the bedroom but light blue or light green can also be good. Take a moment also to look at the relationship corner. When standing in the bedroom door looking into your bedroom, what do you have in the back right corner?

Hello there!
I have just discover your site and I found it full of infos and I'd like to ask something also.

I live in a flat, my flat is at the end of a looong corridor and also when you enter the house there is also a corridor which connects with the kitchen and living room(there are in the same room).
When I moved here I read about houses that are at the end of a corridor that is better to put a Pa Qua mirror outside to send away the negative energy that "runs" to the door..and I did.
Lately I started thinking that maybe is also better to put a kind of curtain that will divide the inside corridor with the kitchen...
I feel that it will keep the negative energy away from the inside room.

What is your opinion or advise?
and what colour should I use for the curtain?

Hi, Ken,
I am learning so much from you! Thank you for taking the time to provide this service free of charge as so many of us cannot afford an actual consultation (yet!).

Here is a question I have been unable to find an answer for, anywhere. Our bedroom is in the Knowledge Gua (half Knowledge and half Family, to be precise). The Relationship/Marriage corner of the room itself is in the Family Gua of the house. The adjacent bathroom is half in the Family area and half in the Wealth area (!!!). Same with my closet. I'm at a loss as to how to manage all this, as far as colors, elements, decor. I have many other questions as well, but this is the one that is bugging me the most at this time.

Dear Ken,

I you am a single mom living in the netherlands and I have had alot of bad luck if you can call it that. I haven't done too much yet with Feng Shui but it keeps coming up in my head and I am hoping that it will bring some positive energy into my life in the form of friends, money, joy and fun. It's time to paint our bedroom. We've had light pink walls, but they just look washed out and they annoy me every time I"m in the room. Our bedroom is northwest in the house, our bed is placed as it should be. Furniture is a deep cherry wood. According to the birth charts, my husband and I are both water elements. First off, congratulations during this exciting time in your life. Regarding the color of your bedroom, peach is good for single people looking for a relationship but not advisable for a married couple. Pink is a positive color for singles and married couples. Also, light blue and light green colors are good for married couples. No dark browns or darker colors recommended for paint colors.

Thank you for taking questions, it's very conforting to know that you are there to help!

I have two pictures of the ocean in my bedroom. One of them is a panoramic ocean with a single white sailboat, which symbolized to me tranquility and the immensity of God. The other is on my side of the bed and has mostly the ocean in pastel pinks, burgundy and teals. I usually see that picture and think of my wishes as being a small drop of water in the scheme of things. It reminds me of the abundace of the Universe. The room is painted a soothing mixture of all different whites and creams, and I faux finished the wood pieces with a white wash on golden pine, were I placed ivy leafs in some of the pieces. I's a very soothing room, I'm not sure about the romance part...I am in a long standing happy relationship. Could you help me to spice up the bedroom with color? thanks, Lily

I am single should the pink or peach color be used as an accent wall color and if so which wall.I really like red as a accent wall color behind my head board.

Colette, The bedroom is yin energy. Red is yang energy. I don't recommend such a bright red color for a wall from a Feng Shui stand point. I would consider making that wall the peach or pink wall.

I have been married for 6 years and I need to heat things up in our bedroom... My husband is very strong tempered and very workaholic, i'd like him to chill more and learn how to enjoy the moment... My bedroom has light yellow walls and my bed set is brown and beige... What should I do about colors and where to place them (I have two nice paints on tio of the bed of a couples bodies envolved w each other)...

Dee, Light green may be a good color for your bedroom. Keep in mind that you don't have to paint all the walls with color. You could have one accent wall be light green and the rest white. Stay way from Peach color.

Hi Ken!

Thank you for this marvelous blog. I have a small problem in choosing between pink and peach.

I am in my early twenties, and in a relationship which can be classified in the 'ok-but-not-actually-the-greatest' zone, but its something I'd like to work on more as I find my boyfriend to be intelligent and caring though somewhat perfectionist and demanding.

Living in an Asian country, I live with my parents and intend to do so till marriage.

I'd like to have 'peach blossom luck' as you call it: 'will be outgoing, social, make new friends and have numerous admirers'.

So, regarding my situation, what would you recommend? A warm pink or peach?

Eire, Based on what you described, I recommend a peach color to add to your room. However, once you become engaged or married, you may want to consider changing it to a light green color.

HI Ken! After reading through your advice I did some more research. I have a small problem: in some articles I read that peach blossom luck, though giving many admirers, also tends to give short term romances. This is said to be because, though peach blossoms appear in abundance, there lifetime is short lived.

What is you opinion on this matter?

Erie, I personally have not found that to be true. Of course, once you are married, I do recommend changing the color.

Hi Ken,

I went through a rough break up half a year ago and I want to repaint my room to have a new energy and feel. I am in my early twenties am recovering from mild depression and am ready for change.

Right now my room is yellow, peach, orange and pink (a sunrise) is painted on one of my walls.

are there any other colors you would recommend to bring happiness, energy, confidence?

I was thinking a light purple or lavender
do you think this will be too sad of a color?

Hello Ken!

I am changing bedrooms e.g. repainting, redecorating, etc. My now-soon-to-be-former room is a lovely pale pink (not tacky) and I want to accent it w/ browns & convert it to a make-up / meditation room. I was initially going to paint the new bedroom a subtle beige-brown w/ accents of the chocolate brown and offwhite (materials e.g. bedding) to off-set the other room. This room is well-lit in the morning, which I luv, and I want it to be like Zen when going to bed. I am 40 and single - and kind of restarting my life! Your insight would be appreciated! Michelle, I would still stick with some of the color recommendations as I listed above such as light green, light blue or a pink or peach color. Adding the darker browns may have a way of lowering your chi or energy and not empower you to go after what you truly want in life or in a relationship.

Hi Ken, I am not married but i live with my boyfriend. I painted my room with a brown looking skin color (it is not dark) because i read in another page that skin colors are good feng shui for bedrooms. Is it correct? or do you recommend to change to a different color?

Hello Ken. I am in my mid 50's and recently divorced. I am quite content being on my own and would prefer to stay that way. I've had quite a bit of sadness after the loss of a child. I need to energize myself and thought to start with my bedroom. It's in the southeast corner of my home. As I enter my room there is a wall, so I have to go right to the bedroom, or left to the masterbath. Being content as a single person, what color(s) would you recommend for the bedroom and the bathroom. Also, what can I place on the wall in front of the doorway? Thank you.

Hi Ken,

My husband and I are thinking of painting the wall behind our bed an accent color. We love the soft brown color of our bedroom walls, but that wall needs some touch ups or an overhaul (we don't know the paint color). I was thinking a magenta would look nice (I liked Benjamin Moore's Gyspy Pink), but I don't want it to bring too much energy into the room and interrupt with our sleep. I do like the idea of adding fire colors though...

What are your thoughts? Do you have a different idea that would work better? The brown is a soft coffee or oyster color.

please help. I am just about to change my entire bedroom this week, new wardrobes (white), new bed, new dressing table.I have been with my partner for two years we have had a rocky time due to outside forces and internal hang up but we have sorted a lot of stuff out and starting again (i also have 2 kids from my previous marriage), this is the first time in the 2 years his stuff is in the bedroom as he had a closet outside the bedroom. I want to make a fresh start for us, happiness and passion. but im not keen on pastel pinks!!! what colour can i do the room? Sue,

Light blues and light greens are positive colors for a bedroom as well as small accent colors of red. Green represents tranquility, hope and freshness as seen in spring growth or that of a new plant or leaf. Keep in mind that the entire bedroom does not need to be painted this color, it could be just one wall and the rest remain neutral. I advise against the red or purple colors for the bedroom.

Vi, for peach blossom luck, it is recommended that you paint one or all the walls a lighter peach color. Keep in mind that if you marry, you will want to paint your bedroom a different color.

Hey Ken,
My husband and I are shifting to a new house. My bedroom is white painted with dark brown leather bed and brown side drawers, it looks really good. I wanted to use grey pebble coloured wallpaper for wall behind the bed, is it ok use in couple's bedroom, or which colour would you recommend?
and 1 more thing we have a fitted wardrobe in d opposite direction of bed with a drsser with mirror in the center and as far as i know mirrow should nnot be there in front of bed, so what would you recommend we should do? how should we hide it during night time.

Hi Ken,
I recently read your blog and find it really informative. I have a dilemma that i hope you can help with. I've recently moved into a house a few months ago with new housemates. I'm still feeling unsettled and don't sleep well (it's 3am right now). I need to buy new bed sheets and was wondering what colours would be good for a restful and calm sleep. Black is my first choice, but i could also do olive greenn, cream or a light eggplant colour. The rest of the room is white and grey and my bed is black. I noticed no one has mentioned black for bedroom so i want to make sure I'm not setting myself for more anxiety and restless sleep. Thanks in advance!
