Is a Sky Lobby in a NYC Apartment Good Feng Shui?
In big cities like New York City, where space is at a premium, it's becoming more common to create apartments with a “sky lobby,” where the apartment's entryway is on an upper level, accessible via elevator, and retail locations or an entire shopping mall are located on the lower level. This is not necessarily bad Feng Shui, but it's important to look at other aspects of the building before evaluating it.
Evaluating the Main Entrance
The entrance to the sky lobby, like the door to a New York City apartment unit, is not the main entrance, but is a secondary concern. First, evaluate the Feng Shui of the main entrance, which would be the entry to the retail locations. The main entry should be open and airy and situated at ground level -- you should not have to walk down or up stairs to reach the main entrance.
If the main entrance is accessible only via elevator, as is the case when you enter from a parking garage, or the apartment has multiple main entrances, you should avoid the building. The chi will not collect effectively in the main entryway to be dispersed through the apartments within.
Evaluating the Sky Lobby
The sky lobby should meet all the Feng Shui criteria as the main entrance, but it's not as important as having a good main entrance. A main entryway that allows chi to collect and be dispersed throughout the space is a primary consideration when you're buying or renting an apartment.
There is nothing inherently positive or negative about having an apartment with retail space below. In fact, depending on the main entry and other Feng Shui considerations, living above a vibrant, thriving retail space could bring good fortune because of all the life chi that's attracted to the space.
On the other hand, if the retail stores below your apartment all have “going out of business” signs in their doors, it could be a sign that you should continue your apartment search elsewhere.
