Feng Shui Living in a Studio Apartment

Feng Shui consultant, I get a lot of people who ask me if their one-room (aka studio) apartment is bad Feng Shui. Whether or not a space is a single room, big or small, does not create good or bad energy by itself. Just as small spaces can be jam-packed with positive chi, the wide-open floor plan of a studio apartment can provide lots of space for good energy to circulate.
Here are three ways to use Feng Shui to your advantage in a small studio apartment. 1. Keep the floor plan open and inviting. Don't fill a studio apartment with clutter down every pathway. Take full advantage of the open floor plan by possessing only items you use regularly and/or love. Consider holding a garage sale, using freecycle, or donating to a charity organization items you don't need or want.
2. Differentiate spaces with furniture or screens. While it's not necessarily bad if you can see your bed from the main living area, if the lack of privacy bothers you a decorative screen or a curtain can divide the space visually. Just be sure not to block the flow of chi with a permanent, heavy piece of furniture, unless it feels as if it fits in the space. If the apartment is large enough, you can use furniture placement strategically to create distinct spaces for eating, sleeping and living.
3. Use the Feng Shui ba gua to your advantage. You can activate different trigrams of the ba gua with live plants, lighting solutions and other objects that encourage the flow of chi into certain areas to attract fortune in those areas of your life. Live plants bring positive energy to any space -- even a small NYC apartment.
