Indeed we must focus on the chi of our primary entrance to our home, But I believe that one major entry to our suburban homes is frequently overlooked.

The garage, think about it, for most us, we either pull up to the garage door, open it and either enter with the car or leave the car outside and then enter through the garage. So this space deserves to be treated accordingly,Just as we need not have obstacles in our primary entrance. How does your garage fair? can you pull your car in and easily exit? If your garage is used primarily for storage do you have a clear unobstructed path to the entry to the home from the garage. Is your garage neat and organized? Are the floors clean, Painted, sealed or colored with a stain. The walls, are they clean painted, and also is the space illuminated correctly.
I suggest removing the single ceramic light bulb in each bay and install an energy efficient fluorescent fixture. Fluorescent fixtures will provide a much brighter cleaner light. As far as organization within the space, what does it say about you as an individual? think about what you see as you come and go and how your space may have subtle influences upon your energy. My single car garage is my daily exit and entry . I have taken the time to clean out the garage which was relatively well organized, clean and completely revamp the space.I repainted all the walls and ceiling, built a closet and re organized tools for better access.I even added some color accents and hung some print art work on some blank wall areas.
the floor has ben painted as well. So I can't help but say that coming and going through my garage is quite a pleasant experience as well having well organized access to tools and such.
I guess the next focus is what is the space like when you then enter into your home from the garage?Ask your self all the same questions as ken has noted and take form there. Foe me I then enter directly into a clean well lit, unobstructed galley, style kitchen.
good luck

Just a question please. I have been laid off from work since summer as many many people are also out of work. I am taking this time to get the clutter out, clean, recycle, and try to follow the bagua for career and fame. Do you suggest any specific cures that could help. Thank you.

Hi Ken! I have a question for you. If you do have a wall (or partial wall) directly facing your main entrance, are you saying that's a good place for a mirror?

I tend to think that would be good -- but, at the same time, seeing a reflection as soon as you come in might be a little startling. What do you think?

Hi Ken,

I have a question, What you do if you have a staircase right in front of your main door. I mean as soon as you enter I have a stair. Is that okay or what should i do which help me in my career.

I'm very new to Feng Shui but have begun using some cures you recommended, and I already feel the difference in my home! Thank you!

My question: I live in New York, on the 3rd floor of a brownstone. When you speak of 'main entrance' do you mean that front door downstairs that all the tenants use? (and I have no control over, lol) OR are you referring to the door to MY apartment? When I read books on Feng Shui I usually get confused because I'm not sure which door direction I should be considering when orienting my place...
Posted @ Tuesday, February 23, 2010 12:58 PM by Lisa
Lisa - Although you would like at the main entrance to the apartment building to access the chi of the building, you will review your apartment door as this is how the chi or life energy enters your personal space / home.

Hey Ken, I'm pretty new to feng shui and recently just moved into a new home so I'm trying to feng shui it. I have a question for you concerning the front door, it faces or is in line with my back door. There isn't a way that I can place something in between the doors the slow down the Chi, is there something else that I can do to help it? Thank you for your help!

Is it bad to have the front door opening outwards instead of inwards?
Posted @ Tuesday, May 04, 2010 5:51 PM by Tania
Front door vs. garage door entry? Do I treat the door that I enter the house differently than the main front door? Also, should I relay the bagua from that garage entry point, or keep it at the same main door?
Posted @ Monday, May 24, 2010 9:10 AM by Maria
The garage is not a living space so you would not include that in the layout of your space. In this situation, it is best to layout the ba gua using the front door. You should also make an attempt to use the front door as a entrance if possible. This is the way the home is designed to greet you rather than through a side or back door. Your life can also be impacted by the first room you see. If you encounter a bathroom first, you may notice a tendency to use the restroom upon entering your home. Or if the kitchen is the first room, you may notice that you get hungry and want to snack.

Hi

I really need help.

I am trying to Feng Shui my bedroom but am coming up with many problems in regards to positioning my bed.

Option 1 is on the same wall as the bedroom door (facing south), option 2 has the door opening directly onto the bed (facing east) and option 3 has the bed under a window (facing west).

From what I have read all of these have a problem as with '1' i cant see the door unless I lay on my right hand side, '2'my head is directly in line with the door and from what I have read '3' means I will loose energy because I am under a window...these are however the only choices I have as there is a fire place on wall number 4 (the bed faces the fire place in option 1).

Any help you can give would be much appreciated.
Posted @ Tuesday, November 16, 2010 2:22 AM by Maggie
Maggie, the lesser of the evils that you describe would be to have your bed under the window. However, it is best to have a solid headboard of wood or fabric. The headboard represents protection and the stability in or potential of a relationship.

Hello ken.

The doors in my house are the old fashioned pocket doors. One floor i use as an office, and the second i use as as a living space. With doors such as these, is there anything i can put on the doors to bring in chi for improvement to business and my life as a whole. I will need any ideas, or something that can be stationery on the door as they slide all the way into the pocket. I am in the Real Estate industry.

Hi Ken,

I have been laid off from my Job in Sept 2010. I have subsequently shifted into a North-East Facing house. I have set up a Chime with 7 rods at the enterance and am on the 2nd floor. Is it good both financially and to enhance my professional life as well.

Hi Ken -
What are your thoughts on having the (interior) basement door being closed in your home? My husband leaves it open sometimes so the dogs can go up or down but I get a feeling of uneasiness.
Thanks!

Ken,

I live in front of a t junction road. The apartment building i live in faces South; but my main and only entrance into my apartment is in the back of the building and faces north. That is my 1st dilemma. Im not really bothered by the t junction road because the apartment building sits on a hill & in front of the building there are a millions of rocks for landscaping, so i feel protected. My 2nd dilemma is when you in enter my apartment you enter through (northeast) of the bagua into directly into the kitchen and yes the first thing you see upon entering is my stove. Ive read by placing a mirror would cure the ill effect but then i figured water-mirror and fire-stove isn't that bad?? I'm basically concerned with not losing my health or wealth. So what is your opinion as far as this situation. i appreciate your help.
Posted @ Saturday, February 26, 2011 2:59 PM by Michael
Hi Ken,

I have bagua mirrors over all of my outside doors.I always thought they protected us.Someone told me recently its very bad to have them and all the bad energy your pushing away will bounce back at me many times more. I only took one down as a test, our main door main enterance. We arnt at a T junction but more like a capital L traffic comes at us but then turns away. I took it down and never felt good about it and now Im going to put it back.More crappy stuff has happened since I took it down. I guess I dont really understand flying star and I will go back to my comfort zone BTB Feng shui. Is this a hush hush thing? I have written so many Feng Shui consultants and no one ever comments back to me???

Thanks in advance

Hi Ken. Thank you for all your helpful advice. At my front door, as soon as you come in, there is a wall right in front of you. Now, I've been told not to have pictures of water or waterfalls right there because it represents the water(abundance and opportunities) flowing right out. I know it is good to have things in the entrance that make you feel good. Can you put pictures of your family here, or paintings or pictures of flowers, are these things okay? This is the first wall you see directly in front of you when you come in my house. I look forward to your response. Thank you so much.

Hi Ken,

I Love your Feng Shui techniques! I'am always intrigued by your methods and suggestions. I just have one concern. My front door (facing North) & (northeast of bagua) opens into the kitchen. My dining room consist of North & NorthWest. How do I activate my career in this section, without bringing a desk into the dining room. Or What would you recommend? I already have a water fountain and wind chime in the north between kitchen & dinning room, nothing seems to be working. Ive also adjusted my Southern area by adding my achievements and red candles. Still nothing. Getting worried as I'am looking for employment and bills are piling up. =/

Hello,

I have a large tree right in front of my front door. Inside the door, there is a 4 stair staircase and a pool in the backyard. Moving is not an option. What should I do to help good chi enter and stay in my home?

Hi - I am terribly in need of your help ! My home is a split level - open the front door, onto a small landing facing stairs up and stairs down. The home is open. The kitchen is upstairs with a bathroom & 2 bedrooms. The downstairs is a large open area (open from floor to ceiling, at your right, as you stepped thru front door) with the room flowing under the upstairs kitchen (upstairs area looks like a loft with white open railing area overlooking the open area below.) At bottom of stairs, heading down, is a bathroom and to the left is a bedroom. I am at a loss on what to do about the missing piece of my map - with the huge open area. And, how do I create job success in this small area when I open my front door? and, how do I keep my energy from getting stuck or flowing right down the stairs? I am in desperate need of any advice you can give me. Thank you so very, very much!!!

I am trying to plan a garden on the east side of my home and am not sure which way to align the map.My main entrance to the home is in the north, but the main entrance to my garden is in the south. There will be a gate in the north entrance to the garden, but it will not be the main gate for the garden and will not be used much if ever.

Most used entrance vs. front door vs. business entrance, Hi I really need some help as everything in feng shui seems focused on the front door. However, our home has 3 doors and is on a corner lot - we have a backdoor inside a fence which we do not enter the house through, we have a front door which is rarely used and we have a door near the driveway which enters into the professional bakery which is built onto our home where I have wedding cake tastings and have clients enter and because it is on the driveway side this is also where we, our friends and our family enter the home. So can I treat this like a front door? as far as feng shui. Of course we put some care into the actual front door too. But I especially wish to place a garden fountain across from the bakery door and make a lovely little oasis of a garden for everyone entering that way. The only people who come to our front door are those that have a pet with them (NOT ALLOWED in bakery) or delivery people. 99% of people come into our home via the bakery. Thanks for any help on this!

Hi, I live in Alaska, and have an arctic entry to my home. The entry does not fall into my nine areas of my homes gua. How do I fix the energy of my entry? My entry also includes my utility sink, washer/dryer, and my water system.

Hi Ken,

Im confused, In my feng shui book it says not to put a mirror on the wall opposite the front door as it will not allow the chi into the house or room and will reflect it back through the door.

So whats right?

Thanks Tania

Your Blog is very good, I like it! Thank you for your sharing!

Tania,

There are a variety of different Feng Shui schools and approaches. Based on the Feng Shui that I practice, mirrors can be used to enhance and activate areas and allow the feeling of moving forward when blocked. As a result, I personally recommend using mirrors in that type of situation.
Posted @ Wednesday, October 12, 2011 9:42 PM by Ken Lauher
I know for a fact that it is bad feng shui to place a mirror directly across from the entry door. It prohibits the energy to come into the home because it bounces off the mirror and exits. So, I'm not saying you don't know what you're talking about but you may want to check that out.
Posted @ Wednesday, October 19, 2011 2:22 PM by Jessica
Jessica, keep in mind there are a variety of different schools of thought regarding Feng Shui approaches. In the BTB Feng Shui method, mirrors can not only be used to empower area, make up for missing sections in the ba gua but can also be added when you experience a brick wall effect such as having a wall directly in front of your door within close proximity. This can allow you to feel as though you can move into the space and move forward in life. Also will reduce the startling factor that a wall close to a entrance can have. If it resonates with you, great, if not, that is fine as well and you can find other alternatives that may work best for you.

Chang,

Thank you for the note. Based on the limited information, I am not able to get a good visual picture of the bedroom or location of the bed. You may want to consider a Feng Shui consultation to have a custom action plan put into place that will best serve your needs and goals.

Hi Ken,

So thankful for your posts (and responses).
Is the direction of the feng shui map based on the entrance of that room or the direction of the house.
For instance, our house faces North. But our office, enters facing North from a door that is South. Where would the "black" be?
__= walls

Posted @ Saturday, December 17, 2011 6:04 PM by Cme
Crystal,

The direction of the map is based on the entrance to the room. Based on your diagram, your door is in the knowledge section and directly across would be the wealth area. Where the window is located is the career section.
