Seasonal Affective DisorderBetween 5 and 20 % of the population suffers from Seasonal Affective Disorder, either a mild form of the depression, which comes on when the weather gets colder, or a more serious seasonal depression that may require medical treatment.

This winter, with its brutal storms, may have left many people feeling trapped in their homes, colder than usual, and even more prone to symptoms of SAD. Take heart -- winter's almost over and the first greenery of spring should be popping up on lawns and parks everywhere.

But if you've just had enough of winter, here are three steps you can take right now to feel better.

1. Add live plants to your environment. Bringing in a bit of greenery or fresh cut flowers can do a lot to give a spring-like feel to your home or apartment, even if the temperature outside is still sub-30 degrees.

2. Take advantage of early morning daylight. Open your blinds early in the morning to let the sun cascade in. It's a great way to feel better. You can also take advantage of the sun going down later in the evening with a brisk walk after work. The cool air can even be invigorating.

3. Lift your head high. Just as our mood is reflected in our body language -- people can often tell you're feeling down by the way you walk and stand -- we can change our mood by changing our physiology. Make a concerted effort to stand straighter, hold your head high, shoulders back, and breathe deeply. It's hard to feel “down” when you're physically lifting yourself up.
