Feng Shui in a NYC Studio Apartment

feng shui studio apartmentPeople often ask me if a studio apartment is inherently “bad Feng Shui.” They want  to know how they can better separate the space. Many people in smaller NYC studio apartments are also considered about the bed being part of the living space, because they know in Feng Shui the bedroom should be a peaceful sanctuary for rest and relaxation.

Myths About Feng Shui in NYC Studio Apartments

Let's clear up some myths surrounding studio apartments.

1. Some spaces are just too small for Feng Shui. - Definitely not true. I'd rather live in a small, studio apartment with positive energy where I can be productive than in a large home that has stagnant chi in every corner. The important thing in a smaller space like a NYC studio is that the chi can flow freely and that you feel comfortable in the space.

2. You shouldn't be able to see your bed from the living area. - Again, this isn't true. As long as your bed is in the command position of the room -- so you can see the door, but it's not in line with the door -- living in a studio should not prevent a good night's sleep or block your success.

However, appliances like televisions and computers may give off too much energy at night for restful sleep. Consider concealing these in an armoire or entertainment center with doors you can close at night. If you feel that you'd like more privacy in your sleeping area, consider a move-able screen or a curtain you can pull back during the day for a more spacious feeling.

3. It's okay to walk straight into the kitchen area. - While it's common to have a stove and sink very close to the entry in a studio apartment, this is bad Feng Shui. You shouldn't be able to see your stove from the front door, as this can lead to misfortune, illness, financial difficulty and also fires or theft. Consider placing a screen to separate the kitchen from the front door, if possible, or using cabinets or free-standing, double-sided shelving units to block the view of the stove from the front door (and to add storage space, a bonus in a small apartment.)
