I'm also wondering what is the cure for a staircase directly across from the front door.

Maggie, I would look at the top center of your apartment (fame area) and the bottom right position (helpful people) sections related to the ba gua. Laura, these are based on compass or cardinal directions which is a different school of thought from the BTB feng shui methodology that I practice. One thing you can do is to make sure your entry way is open, clear of items such as furniture, shoes, etc., and that it is well lit. You can also add a mirror directly opposite the front door to feel as though you are not blocked and can move into the space and progress in life.
