Feng Shui Health Tips: Fight Fall Depression

feng shui healthThe weather is getting colder, the days get shorter and the nights get longer. Sometimes it's hard to stay positive, motivated and full of energy when the sun sets at 6 PM (or earlier.) Take heart. Many people suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which is a form of depression caused by the colder temperatures and less access to sunlight during the winter. It is reported that approximately 1 percent of Americans in Florida suffer from SAD, while close to 10 % of New Hampshire residents suffer from this form of depression.

In spite of the name, SAD can start to kick in with the first cold snap in the fall.

Even if you don't have SAD, which is considered by medical professionals as a “specifier” or form of major depression, you may still suffer from a mild form of the winter blues. Doctors give this a name, too: Subsyndromal Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Symptoms of Seasonal Depression
Are you depressed? Symptoms of SAD include:

- difficulty waking up
- tendency to overeat (especially carbohydrates)
- overall lack of energy, especially an “afternoon lag”
- difficulty concentrating
- withdrawal from family and friends
- pessimistic thoughts and a feeling of hopelessness

Break the Endless Cycle
When you're depressed, you often withdraw from your social support network, which leads to feelings of loneliness and more depression. Likewise, dwelling on negative thoughts and feeling hopeless make it difficult to beat what seems like an endless cycle.

If you are depressed, why not consider following these tips for better Feng Shui health before resorting to drugs or other treatments? After all, SAD is directly caused by our environment in winter time. It makes sense that by making positive changes to our environment, we can alleviate our symptoms.

Here are some Feng Shui tips you can use for better health, including how to beat depression without drugs:

Let lots of light into your home, especially in the morning. If you have south facing windows, take advantage of early morning sunlight. Sunlight provides many natural health benefits and has been shown to alleviate the symptoms of SAD.
Bundle up and get outdoors. It may be chilly outside, but the cold will wake you up and breathe new life into you. Take time to appreciate nature -- brightly colored leaves blowing off trees as the seasons change, the wind touching your skin. Breathe it all in with gratitude that you are alive to enjoy it.

Get moving. While you're outside, take a brisk walk, a job or, if you're physically fit, a run. Better yet, get together with friends and enjoy a game of touch football in the park. As the weather gets even colder, indoor exercise works, too. Aim for 20 minutes a day, three times a week.

Clear the clutter. One of the symptoms of SAD or even just the winter blues can be that you feel closed in. Pressure builds -- and the most stressful time of year for many people is approaching. Clear the clutter from your space now to permit the chi to flow freely -- and you'll be one step closer to being ready for holiday company, too.

Evaluate the health trigram of the Feng Shui bagua. The center of your home is referred to as the Tai Chi position or in the Ba Gua relates to health. This is Yin energy and should be open and clear. No moving water such as fountains or fish tanks should be in the center of the home. So take a moment to evaluate if the center area of your home is clean, clear and at peace. Remember, first you have health, then you have wealth.
