3 Simple Ways to Feng Shui Your Front Door

Feng Shui home resized 600We've often said that the entrance is one of the three most important areas of your home. But what about your front door, specifically? When you stand in your doorway, you should feel a sense of balance in the home from all directions. Here are three more Feng Shui factors to consider when you first enter your home.

1. The front door should open into the widest part of the room. If it doesn't, there are a number of cures you can employ. You can re-hinge the door so it does. If this is impractical, you can mirror the wall facing the door opening, so you can see the rest of the room from the doorway. You can add an automatic light that comes on when the door opens.

If a bedroom is located behind the direction of swing of a front door, this could lead to unrest for the people who sleep in that room. Hang a shopkeeper's bell on the door to avert physical danger and misfortune.

2. If your front door opens onto a long narrow corridor along the center line of your home, you may have financial problems caused by chi rushing rapidly in and out of the home. Hang windchimes or Clear, Faceted Swarovski Feng Shui Crystals along the corridor to slow the flow of chi. You can also use mirrors to give the illusion that the corridor is wider.

3. The best color for a door is green; this color will bring fortune and luck to the people inside the home or apartment.

What about if the door opens and there's a small wall right in front of the door and a stairway up?

To the right of the door leads to the rest of the house on the ground level.

Thanks Ken for the great tips! My front door is stained wood and has a big window then we have a seperate wooden screen door over that which is painted red. What are we attracting by leaving it red? Appreciate your wisdom!

Interesting tips! I thought black was best for a front door?

HI KEN.......My doors are french doors only one side is used, they are cream. BUT the door opens outwards not inwards like most doors. Is this bad?

What can be done to fix this if so?

Donna, you're welcome. A red door is auspicious and lucky color. May give you an added energy boost as well.

Lynnie, not sure what defines black to be the best color? Unless someone was saying that it is associated with water and wisdom or because of it being in the career section. There are a variety of methods to approach colors for the exterior of a home. You can apply the 5 element production order to strengthen the energy of the door based on the other colors or you can review the area around the home including the colors that neighbors use to have their colors produce energy for your space. You can use the ba gua and apply it based on that. The best method is to have a professional Feng Shui consultant review your particular space to see what method would be best or if a change is necessary.

Sue, It is not ideal to have a small space in front of a door and then to have stairs directly in front of the door. This can mean that your money and opportunities are constantly running out and very difficult to hold on to anything. It would best to have a professional review your specific case and offer suggestions based on your current situation.

Tania, why is only one side of the doors used? Is the other side a faux door or could it be used?

The only thing I could say about the doors opening out instead of in is have that corrected but probably not a priority as there may be other things that would have a bigger impact on your space and current situation.

Ken the door is bolted on the other side and only one of the doors has the door handle. Both can open but not used as a door per say on that side of the french doors.

We have recently bought a new home. Our main enterance opens in the Drawing Room. The door is fixed on the right side of the wall as you stand outside home.

THe moment you open the door, you see 3 pillars seperated by frosted glass. There is a Bar behind the pillars. On the right hand side, we have put a console where we want to put big square mirror but as you see the mirror from the side, you see the reflection of those 3 pillars with glass partition. PLease advise if this is good position to place the mirror. Look forward to hear on the same.

Manmeet,

Having a difficult time visualizing exactly the layout that you are referring to. May be best with a photo. Consider taking a picture and sending it to me at ken @ kenlauher.com and I'll provide my thoughts.

Tania, if these are your front door, it does not sound ideal. You want to have the ability to open both doors and have the handle on each. This can lead to confusion and a feeling of being stuck and not knowing which direction to turn.

Ken,
My front door faces south, is red and opens to inside the house. It also has a crack from the handle down that I have filled in. It opens to a narrow hall on the left side of the house with a stair case going up to the left. I read I should put a mirror at the top of the stairs facing the door to balance the energy. Is there anything else I should or shouldn’t do?

Hi Ken,
I just bought an 1860s bluestone cottage which is north west facing. It is basically a four room house. When I open the front door which I have painted dark blue, it opens to the left. On the right ( west/ south west ) is the kitchen and to the left ( north/ north east is the lounge. I have a fireplace in the north east of the room. I am a rooster and my bedroom is in the east with an ensuite in the south/ south west. The house is completely square. I can see the backdoor from the front door. I am so overwhelmed and have had a really traumatic 3years. I just bought this house 3 months ago. I really want to be at peace and was hoping you could offer some advice on fixing any problems associated with the layout of the house.
I appreciate your advice dearly,
Thanks Ken,

Some they said the best color for front door is fire color like pink or red what do you think
Posted @ Sunday, November 14, 2010 7:13 AM by moni
My front door, when I enter the apartment opens facing NE. The inside and outside of the door is paited a dark purple/violet. It is not our choice and management does not allow red or green doors. Is this okay?

Hi Ken,

My main entrance door is kind of align with back door (kitchen).

Option 1:

I wanted to add full french door and open the doors outward. Would that be a problem with Feng Shui when opening the french door outward?

Option 2:

The full french door is taking up too much of the cabinet space, therefroe I am considering have a 11/2 french door (the other side call sky light but can be open) and one door would open inward and other must open outward.

Can you advise what is the best option for my situation?
