How to Feng Shui Your Cubicle for Career Success

Feng Shui Cubicle

Corporations don't necessarily design cubicles for success, unfortunately. Many cubicle-dwelling employees feel stuck, exposed, persecuted or unable to advance in their careers. But you can use Feng Shui to make yourself more comfortable in your cubicle and enhance your career success until you finally move into that corner office you desire.

Command position
Most cubicle layouts force the occupant to sit with his back to the cubicle entrance. You can place yourself in the command position, instead, by placing a mirror in front of you. This lets you see behind you, so you can see what's coming at you - in your life and your career.

Under your desk
Space is at a premium in cubicles, so people often use the area under their feet for storage. You may have your computer tower, a tangle of power cords and maybe even boxes, bags and an extra pair of shoes under your desk. Remove these items if possible, organize anything that's left. Can you store your personal belongings in a drawer, or leave them in your car?

At the very least, make sure the area directly below your feet is clear. You should be able to sit straight when you view your computer screen. Sitting an angle can cause numerous health issues.

What's overhead?
Make sure you don't have heavy items over your head. Many cubicles have built-in overhead shelves. Do not fill these shelves with books or other heavy items. If you do, you may feel downward pressure, like a literal weight on your shoulders. Items overhead can also lead to headaches. It is best not to have any items above your head at all.

Remove Piles of Papers
Piles of papers on your desk can mean you're not dealing with items you feel you should be. Unfinished business causes stress and anxiety. Every evening, clear your desk so that you come in each morning feeling refreshed and ready to start a new day.

Proper lighting
Make sure your desk and cubicle is well-lighted. The commercial says, "We'll leave the light on for you," symbolizing a feeling of friendliness and a welcoming atmosphere. This concept applies at work, too. Turn your light on to increase the energy of the space and invite co-workers to visit.

Life energy
Placing a plant in your cubicle enhances the life energy in the space. Consider a money tree plant, bamboo or jade. The plant should be healthy, green and alive, connecting you to nature.

Items of inspiration
Don't scatter documents, calendars and to-do lists around your cubicle. Keep these items carefully filed and organized, making room to add inspirational items to your desk. These can be photos, drawings, figurines-anything that brings you joy and inspires you.

Smell
You may not be permitted to burn a candle at your desk, but consider keeping peppermints in your drawer or a small citrus air freshener in your space. These scents awaken your spirit and give you an all-natural pick-me-up in the middle of the day.

Taste
Keep the chi flowing by placing a small jar of candy in your cubicle. It encourages others to stop by to say hello and grab a treat, increasing the flow of energy, wealth and happiness in your social circles.

I have been at the same job and position for 11 years. Our office moved into a different location.

I'm a receptionist and Assistant office administrator. They changed my desk in a different position were it is up against a wall looking down a long hallway and to my left is were the front door to the office is. Plus my computer has always been in the far right corner of my desk. The design of my desk is not designed large enough to fit my computer properly.

It sits at an angle. I do have a flat screen. I also dont want to upset the IT director for moving my computer.

I noticed you stated sitting at an angle on your computer causes health issues. I have had a few, how does this effect my health?

Any suggestions?

I've been told that getting a mirror is a good idea - - but, I LIKE not knowing what's coming! I'm that way with movies also! *:) Sometimes I'd rather know nothing about a situation - just like to dive in - you know?

Blessings.

Sincerely,

Gretchen, first of all, you need to be set up correctly to be most effective at your job. If your job consists of needing to access the computer and you are constantly twisting your body to use it, it will cause muscle aches, pains and fatigue. Is this going to support you in doing the best job you can? If this were to happen, would it be worth it to ask the IT person for some assistance?

Fernanda, sometimes it is difficult to try and do them all at once. Take a moment and ask yourself what 3 things must I do this week to achieve my desired outcome? Then take action on that.

The computer is a big part of my job at work.

I have addressed this with the IT person in the past.
It took her 2 years to give me a flat screen to have a little more room becuase I was experiencing pain in my shoulders. It's like I'm shoved in a corner when I have to do anything on my computer.

I've done my best to work with what I have. Today I attempted to move the screen and the Key board so it is not at a full angle. I placed the key board directly in front of me and the screen a bit closer so I dont have to move my full body to work on it.

Now I only have to glance slightly to my right to check my work.

Gretchen, sounds like you're moving in the right direction. Do you have everything that you can cleared from under your desk so that you feet can be straight out in front of you?
Posted @ Tuesday, November 10, 2009 9:31 PM by Ken Lauher
The computer modum is under the far right corner of the desk, The only other thing's are the wires and eletric chords and poewr strip that run along the bottom of the desk wall in front of my feet about 2 feet from were my feet are placed when I'm sitting.

Gretchen, sounds fine as long as you're not kicking the cords all day long. If so, tie them up in an orderly fashion.

Olga, Thanks for the interesting question and comment. There are 2 things that can be addressed here. 1 is that a crack can represent change happening in your life. 2. It can represent the taking in of negative energy and should be cleared or disposed of.

Hi ken, I dont have a office space and have had the computer in the bedroom. Since this is not a good space for it. Where is the best place in the house when one doesnt have an sep room? Thanks
Posted @ Wednesday, April 21, 2010 9:43 PM by Tania
Tania, It is ideal to not have a computer or TV in the bedroom. I'm personally not familiar with your layout so it is a little difficult to suggest just based on the question. There may be an opportunity in the living room or if you move to a laptop computer as another option.

Hi there,

I have a question regarding my cubicle. I am facing the cubicle entrance. The computer is in the middle and the entrance is on the left side facing outside the cube. Is my computer in the Career gua and entrance in the helpful people gua? I am trying to figureout how to organize my cubicle according to the gua's.

Thanks,

Kiran

Thanks,
