Simple Steps To Improve Your Physical and Emotional Comfort Level

complete fitness program

A complete fitness program includes exercises to enhance flexibility, strength, and endurance. Improving suppleness in the body improves your physical and emotional comfort level and reduces your chances for injury. Yoga, tai chi, and qigong all expand flexibility while enhancing mind/body integration. At least ten minutes of gentle, conscious stretching should be a part of every exercise warm-up routine.

Unfortunately, we see too many people who have the good intention to start exercising, but fail to take the time to warm up properly. As a result, they strain a muscle or pull a ligament and are unable to continue the fitness program they need.

Building strength enhances vitality and reverses a common feature of aging known as sarcopenia. This word, coined by researchers at Tufts University, means "lack of flesh." Weakness, reduced muscle mass, and increased body fat are well-known consequences of inactivity. But they can all be reversed through strength training. Improving muscle tone through weight-bearing exercises can also improve your posture and reduce back pain.

If you are dealing with chronic low-back problems and believe you cannot exercise, start slowly to build your back and abdominal muscle strength and your pain will diminish.

There are emotional and psychological benefits of exercise. Hundreds of studies attest to the value of regular exercise on your mood and mental state. These are some of the psychological benefits that have been shown with exercise:

- Less Depression
- Less anxiety
- Less anger
- Less cynical distrust
- Improved self-esteem
- Better resilience to stress
- Improved sleep

Exercise gives you a greater sense of confidence and competence. It is good for your body and good for your mind.

What type of exercise will you do today?

Thanks, Ken...I need to get back to exercising...a good reminder for me to get started on this...I have some simple exercises I learned about from 9 Health Fair, and I also have Tai Chi and quigong and yoga CD's....starting simple, maybe requiring myself to do 10 minutes of exercises from that mix....decide which ones I want to do and then maybe try to do them 3 times/week...and maybe walk 3 times/week...that would be a good discipline for me to try to stick to....right now it is more or less a random assortment of everything which I don't stick to because I am so stressed and trying to be gentle with myself and not force myself to overdo...I used to be very type A--sort of---at least I used to be very consistent and disciplined about exercise....then I retired, got really sressed (the 2 are not cause and effect)and have really slowed down now...and really do need to honor myself and be very gentle now in all things...not forcing myself..since I have negatively forced in a negative way by others so much in my life especially now as well as in the past...so I am trying now to just follow my real pace, and be guided by that...and provide the gentle slow pace and honoring of myself thta I have never experienced from others in my life...I can experiment...and this is a good reminder....to try to start that...and respect for the body and psyche being of the prime importance/priority...I have thought of a pilates class for my lower back and abdominal issues...and actually I do have a pilate CD for that...a 10 minute workout...just remembered that...but of course I must start simply and easily...I find if I try to do too much I don't stick to a routine and then give it up....so I am not even going to think about the pilates CD and class now...and just concentrate on the other things I mentioned....do you have any ideas about how to stick to an excerice regimen...any pointers or experience..any paper work you might have tried? Thanks so much...take care, all...Love to all, Sharon

Sharon, take time to understand why you are doing the exercise. Every goal is tied to a feeling that we want to experience. Begin to understand what you will gain from exercise and not just because you want to look better, shed a couple of pounds but what you will feel if you exercise and what the benefits of feeling a certain way will help you accomplish.
