The Ego In Illness

Ego and illness

An illness can either strengthen or weaken the ego. If you complain, feel self-pity, or resent being ill, your ego becomes stronger. It also becomes stronger if you make the illness part of your conceptual identity: "I am a sufferer of such and such a disease." Ah, so now we know who you are.

Some people, on the other hand, who in normal life have a big ego, suddenly become gentle and kind and much nicer people when they are ill. They may gain insights they may never had had in their normal life. They may access their inner knowing and contentment and speak words of wisdom. Then, when they get better, energy returns and so does the ego.

When you are ill, your energy level is quite low, and the intelligence of the organism may take over and use the remaining energy for the healing of the body, and so there is not enough left for the mind, that is to say, egoic thinking and emotion. The ego burns up considerable amounts of energy.

In some cases, however, the ego retains the little energy that remains and uses it for its own purposes. Needless to say, those people who experience a strengthening of the ego in illness take much longer to recover. Some never do, and so the illness becomes chronic and permanent part of their false sense of self.

Wow, I actually know people whose ego has increase in illness and they totally identify with their illnesses, for them it is just one thing after another, they talk about 'my this' and 'my that' as if they own it. It makes me sad because if you own something you will never let it go! I'm not sure whether its very nice of me but I try to avoid talking to people if all they talk about is their illness. It makes me more cautious in observing how i react if I experience illness!

I had a mental illness that i resented, rarely talked about it and pushed it away.It persisted till i embraced it and asked what it had to show me.Once i listened to its wisdom and worked with t ,the illness had no power over me.iI am now very stable as such if i listen to my body and it's signals.

This is a great post for me, Ken. I have suffered from chronic disabling back pain for the past 20 years, first begining after I broke my back, but made progressively worse by each one of a total of 5 back surgeries. All of this being said, I have learned to accept my disabling pain (chronic pain is medically defined as an illness for those who do not know). I firmly believe that ACCEPTANCE of one's illness, whatever its cause, is the key element to overcoming ego limitations, etc...

Once one is able to reach a level of ACCEPTANCE, the ego can then move forward to act as it is intended. Hope all of this ties in with your post & I also hope it helps others facing their illnesses. I could write on this topic forever, but this is not the place! I thank you for giving me inspiration to write about it elsewhere so that I can possibly help the millions who suffer from various forms of illnesses.

THANK YOU KEN!!!

Is self~help egotistical?
Posted @ Thursday, May 06, 2010 5:45 PM by christie
Selp help saved my life! Well, self help reminded me how to forget the self and focus on others. True happiness lies in our service to others welfare. Mahatma Ghandi had a great quote, "Man becomes great exactly in the degree to which he works for the welfare of his fellow man". I truely think that there is no "self". So if you can trust in the natural power that shall inevitably always heal the "self" once we let go of it, you have not only 'self helped', you have allowed a wisdom much greater than anything we can ever own to heal as it was supposed to before we even showed up.

Self help may begin as "egotistical" but if you surrender to the concepts that most self help materials offer, then you'll begin to understand that slef help is just another way of learning the art of allowing wellbeing to flow naturally... :)

"Needless to say, those people who experience a strengthening of the ego in illness take much longer to recover. Some never do, and so the illness becomes chronic and permanent part of their false sense of self." I know many people who are not egoic who suffer from chronic illnesses. I believe that anyone who thinks they "know" the answer to this Mystery is coming from a place of ego. They Mystery remains as it was meant for the One who created us.
